Soda Ash – A Soap Fail Tale

Oh, how we love to hate soap fails! This was an attempt to save another soap fail. Which resulted in another soap fail! While lye heavy soaps can cause soaps to crumble (this one was not lye heavy), deep soda ash will do the same. This is what happened to this particular soap. Surface soda ash happens from time to time and can usually be steamed, scraped, or washed off – this can be due to a fragrance oil, colorant, oils used, contact to air, temperature variations – many reasons! It is purely cosmetic and will not affect the usage of soap. However, it can sometimes go deeper into the soap causing a brittle texture when cutting. This is what happened here. While I was able to salvage the final soap, it was quite the mess to clean up. Happy Soaping!
